Garrett Morgan was an African American inventor and entrepreneur who made significant contributions to Black history. He was born on March 4, 1877, in Kentucky, and overcame racial barriers to become a successful inventor. Morgan is best known for his invention of the three-position traffic signal, which he patented in 1923. This invention greatly improved road safety and became the basis for modern traffic signal systems.

In addition to the traffic signal, Morgan also invented the safety hood, a precursor to the gas mask, which he famously used to rescue miners trapped in a tunnel explosion in 1916. His innovative inventions and entrepreneurial spirit paved the way for future Black inventors and entrepreneurs, and his legacy continues to inspire generations of African Americans.
